Angel of the elderly

¡@Mr. Lee Kam Hung, a senior journalist, has written an article entitled the Four Don'ts which was published in The Voice by St. James' Settlement.

¡@In the article, Mr. Lee encouraged not just the elderly but everyone to try to achieve the Four Don'ts ¡V Don't make unnecessary comparison, Don't desire what is not yours, Don't think or speak negatively, Don't be angry with anyone for more than a day.

¡@The Voice, a monthly publication which is distributed free of charge, was first published in 1976. There are more than tens of thousands of copies printed each issue. The exquisite color printing and the rich content of the publication is the result of the excellent work of Mr. Chan Ping-lun, Editor of 'The Voice', the 4th generation.

¡@I understand that over the past years Mr. Chan Ping-lun has accomplished many difficult tasks in the process of publishing The Voice, a publication for the elderly. One of the many difficult tasks is to maintain a sufficient financial means.

¡@It was probably not known to the general public that The Voice does accept advertisements. Readers and subscribers of The Voice are mostly highly educated; as such advertisements usually receive good responses.

¡@I was told that Mr. Chan Ping-lun received an award from an overseas organization for his successful volunteer work. When I asked him what the name of the award was, Chan answered, "I can't remember what it was called," changing the subject Chan said, "Most importantly please mention our Electricity Fund for the Feeble Elderly Program in your article. Please help us to introduce it to your readers."

¡@Chan explained that most of the elderly suffer from one or more kinds of chronic diseases, such as Emphysema. They rely on medical equipments to help them breath and to keep them alive. Even though subsidy may be applied from the two electricity companies, it is not enough to cover the extra costs on electricity consumption. This is why donations are always welcome and needed. For donation, please call 8107 8324.

¡@Mr. Chan Ping-lun is a social worker. He is especially energetic when he does volunteer work during public holidays and his own spare time. Chan organized and launched the Personal Emergency Link Service which not only puts the minds of the elderly at ease when they are at home but safes their lives when in emergency situations.

¡@There are also free photograph services and funeral arrangement services available for those elderly who live alone so that they don't have to worry about the last chapter of their lives. Thanks to famous photographer Mr. Chan Wai Keung who has offered his help for the past many years.

¡@Since 1991, Mr. Chan Ping-lun has been, together with a group of volunteer electricians and mechanics, providing free maintenance services to the poor and infirmed elderly who live alone. These volunteer electricians and mechanics help with the repairing of water pipes, electrical appliances, handles in washrooms; they also help with installation of lightings and sometimes even simple renovation work. Together, they have solved uncountable problems for the elderly.

¡@Once I remember seeing Mr. Chan Ping-lun holding in his hand a pile of papers with the contact numbers of the volunteer electricians and mechanics on them. Having talked on the phone for hours, even though his voice has gone hoarse, Mr. Chan Ping-lun continued calling up these volunteers arranging for the maintenance works to be done during that weekend. One of these works to be done was to fix a leakage on the roof of an old lady who lives on a remote outlining island. Suddenly I thought I could see a halo on Mr. Chan's head.
